Types of Laptop Battery

•The nickel cadmium battery, known as NiCad (pronounced “Nigh-Kad”), used to be the most common type of laptop battery. Nickel cadmium batteries couldn’t hold very much power by today’s standards, and could only be charged a limited number of times. NiCad batteries could easily be ruined by being left on the charger after they had reached full charge, or by being recharged before they were completely dead. The latter problem, called the “memory effect,” meant that if you recharged your laptop battery before it had run completely down, it would remember the point at which you put it back on the charger, and only discharge that far the next time you used it.

•The nickel metal hydride (NiMH) laptop battery was the next step up from NiCad. NiMH batteries could hold considerably more power than NiCad, but they still had something of a memory effect, although it wasn’t as pronounced. Lithium ion (Li-Ion) is the latest technology for laptop batteries; although Li-Ion batteries hold about the same amount of power as NiMH, they are considerably lighter and far superior. The Li-Ion laptop battery doesn’t have a memory effect and lasts considerably longer than its predecessors. If your laptop supports multiple types of batteries, and the Li-Ion is one of them, then you should choose the Li-Ion as the best type of battery available for your laptop.

How Increase the performance of Battery?

Regardless of which type you have, it’s important to properly care for your laptop battery, in order to get as much life out of it as possible.

•”Conditioning,” which means fully discharging and then fully charging the battery, should be done at least every few weeks, as it maintains the full capacity of the laptop battery.

•Some authorities claim that this is not necessary with Li-Ion batteries, while others maintain that it’s a good idea to condition all laptop batteries regularly, rather than simply leaving them plugged into the wall at all times.

•Your laptop battery should never be stored in an area that drops below 50ºF (10ºC) or rises above 95ºF (35ºC); this means that your laptop should not be left in the car or in a storage area that is not climate controlled.

•Also, for extended storage of six months or more, the laptop battery should be discharged to 50% capacity and removed from the computer; a battery stored for an extended period of time at full capacity may lose the ability to charge fully, while a battery stored in a fully discharged state may never be able to charge again at all.

Just like any other battery there are cells inside a laptop battery. Each cell is typically 1.5 volts and a number of cells are arranged in series and connected in parallel to deliver optimum power to the laptop or device. A number of cells are connected together to forma a battery. Connecting a number of cells in parallel means to connect all the negative terminals to each other and positive terminals likewise this increases the power delivering capacity of the battery but not the voltage. Then a number of these batteries are connected in series (negative to positive terminals to raise the voltage). This is done to optimize the voltage level of the battery. These cells are controlled by an internal electronic circuit in the battery.

The internal electronic regulator is the unique property of a laptop battery. This circuit regulates the flow of charge into and out of each internal cell in the battery thus ensuring that each cell has an equal charge at all time in turn ensuring the optimum use and long life of each cell. It also ensures that the cells do not over charge.

The plates of each cell react with the electrolyte (chemical/acid) in the battery causing a flow of electrons from the negative to positive terminals and a flow of ions from the positive to the negative terminal this is the flow of current as we know it. This flow continues until the electrolyte loses its acidity. When the battery is charged the ions are restored to their place in the cell and the electrolyte regains its acidity ready to generate electricity in the cell once again. This process is always the same irrespective of the type of battery.

The process of charging or discharging of the battery is controlled by hardware built into your laptop. This hardware ensures the proper functioning of the cells in the battery and warns you of the tile left before you need to recharge the battery. This indicator is displayed in the right bottom corner of the screen in most notebooks or laptops.

Though the laptop battery is rechargeable, like everything it does have a life span and cannot go on serving you for eternity. Proper care will ensure that the battery lasts longer than it would without the proper care. A battery will normally last between 500-700 charge cycles before it will need to be replaced with a new one. The number of charge cycles of the battery will depend on the usage of the laptop. The more often you need to charge your laptop the sooner you will have to replace the battery.

Every laptop model is designed to suit a particular function and so is the battery designed to match the power requirements of the laptop.  The design of the battery depends on the weight and size of the laptop. A small light-weight laptop will have its design defeated if the battery weighs more than the laptop itself, so the battery has to be designed to suit the model of the laptop.

In the last artcile we know how to calibrate laptop battery. Now let me introduce some tips about re-calibrate laptop battery.

It is difficult to predict how long a laptop battery charge will last because each computer user has different habits and needs. The rate at which you use laptop battery power will determine how long you can use the battery of your laptop. You can re-calibrate your laptop battery if the battery’s life has gotten shorter over time. Your laptop battery might need a good calibration if it doesn’t seem to be getting the mileage that it should. How to re-calibrate laptop battery? The following paragraphs will give you the answer.

First put the laptop computer to sleep by turning off the screensaver and other power management settings of the computer. Then fully charge the computer and allow it to run all the way down until the computer shuts off automatically. Once the laptop battery has fully drained, charge it back up again and restore the screensaver and power management settings.

Re-calibrate your battery every month or so by fully charging, fully discharging, and then fully charging again. Basically to have a chance to re-calibrate your laptop battery is to turn off all power-saving features completely and then fully recharge them. If it doesn’t work for the first time then try two more full discharges and recharges.

The above way of re-calibrating thelaptop batteries works well with laptops using Ni-MH cells. But not with laptops using Li-Ion batteries because deep discharges will actually decrease the charge capacity and lifespan of Li-Ion cells. Moreover Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 20% capacity per year from the time of manufacture at a typical 100% charge level at 25deg.C, even when unused. Li-ion batteries irreversibly lose approximately 2%, 4%, 15% at 0deg.C, 25deg.C and 40deg.C respectively, when stored at 40% charge level. That is every deep discharge cycle decreases the capacity of the Li-ion batteries. As the Li-Ion batteries are chemical in nature, charging and recharging is not going to fix the problem once the chemical reactions stop happening. Therefore the best advice for re-calibrating the Li-Ion batteries is to store the battery at 40% charge if it kept unused for any unlimited period of time. Also don’t leave the battery in the laptop if you don’t use the battery or if you plug the laptop into outlet power.

You can also re-calibrate your laptop battery using Thinkpad T61 Battery Maximizer in order to maximize your laptop battery’s life. If your laptop has IBM ThinkPad Battery MaxiMiser and Power Management features installed, you can verify the condition of the laptop battery. You can check the status of your battery using the Battery MaxiMiser Gauge in the taskbar tray. The ThinkPad’s Lithium Ion battery pack that seems to be an intelligent battery uses a microprocessor to monitor its capacity. Then the microprocessor of the battery pack passes the information about the remaining battery capacity to the laptop. The laptop indicates the capacity with high accuracy.

Using the Dell Learning Utility, a modified version of a Win98 boot floppy, can also help you. Just place it in the floppy drive, and then turn on the computer. The re-calibration process is automated and takes about six hours to finish. This utility is available in different versions for different models. You can run the utility every two months.

If the laptop battery is still bad then it must have developed a memory that cannot be erased easily. If calibration doesn’t help, then it is the right time to purchase another battery.
